Extended network configuration available for new netcup server orders

Today, we are expanding the configuration options for all new Root Server orders from Generation 12. In addition to selecting the location and contract term, you can also specify which public network connection they should have when ordering new server products.

Choose between these options:

  • IPv4 + IPv6 Connectivity
  • IPv6 connectivity
  • Cloud vLAN only

What the respective configuration options mean

  • IPv4 + IPv6 connectivity

This selection gives you a static IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 subnet, both of which are included in your server tariff. This option therefore offers you maximum compatibility and corresponds to the existing standards. If no specific selection is made when ordering, this default setting will be used automatically.

Additional IPv4 addresses and IPv6 subnets can be added as usual for an additional charge after ordering and setting up the server. A Cloud vLAN can also be added.

Discover possible extensions in our KVM server extensions.

  • IPv6 Connectivity

The “IPv6 Connectivity” configuration is particularly suitable for modern applications, internal services or test environments that are already fully IPv6-capable or for servers that should only be accessible via private networks, VPNs or load balancers.

With this option, no public IPv4 address is included in the server tariff. Instead, you receive a /64 IPv6 subnet. In addition, you benefit from a monthly saving of €0.60/ month incl. 19% VAT compared to the option with IPv4.

This makes the selection of IPv6 connectivity a future-oriented, scalable and cost-efficient alternative if no public IPv4 address is required.

Please note before purchasing: Additional /64 IPv6 subnets can be added at a later date for an additional charge if required. However, subsequent allocation of an IPv4 address is no longer possible.

  • Cloud vLAN only

This option is suitable for scenarios in which the server can be operated completely without a public network connection – for example for internal services, cluster nodes, database servers or isolated system components within a multi-level architecture. This choice can be made if all connections are made exclusively via private networks, VPNs or dedicated interconnects and no direct accessibility from the public Internet is required.

With this option, the server can only be reached via the assigned Cloud vLAN. Neither a public IPv4 nor /64 IPv6 subnet is provided.

This choice can be useful to enable a clearly demarcated, controllable network environment and thus a maximum level of isolation and security.

Important: Please note, however, that no additional IP addresses can be added at a later date if this option is selected. Your server will remain unreachable externally.

You can find more information about the network configurations in the Help Center.

FAQ on extended network configuration

Can I switch later from “IPv6 Connectivity” to a configuration with IPv4?

It is not possible to subsequently change the selected network configuration as in the ordering process – regardless of the configuration – for server products that have already been set up.

However, with the “IPv4 + IPv6 Connectivity” option, you can book additional IPv4 addresses or /64 IPv6 subnets for an additional charge after setup. With the “IPv6 Connectivity” option, you can add additional /64 IPv6 subnets. You can find out more here in the Help Center.

Can I add additional IP addresses to my server at a later date?

  • IPv4 + IPv6 connectivity: Yes. Additional public IPv4 addresses and /64 IPv6 subnet can be added at any time for a fee. IPv4 address from €2.00/month, /64 IPv6 subnet from €1.00/month. You can find out more about purchasing additional IP addresses in the Help Center.
  • IPv6 connectivity: Only additional /64 IPv6 subnets can be added. An IPv4 address cannot be added retrospectively.
  • Cloud vLAN Only: No extension to public IP addresses possible. The server remains permanently accessible only via the private Cloud vLAN.

Why does the option with an IPv4 address cost more than the other two options?

IPv4 addresses are very limited worldwide and are becoming increasingly complex and expensive to procure. For this reason, server tariffs with an included IPv4 address will be more expensive in the future than those that only require /64 IPv6 subnets.

Can I add a public IPv4 address or /64 IPv6 subnet later in “Cloud vLAN only” mode?

No. If “Cloud vLAN only” is selected, it is not possible to add public IP addresses at a later date. The server remains permanently accessible exclusively via the private Cloud vLAN. In this case, please order a new tariff with the appropriate configuration.

Which option should I choose if I am unsure?

If you do not know exactly which configuration is suitable for your project, we recommend the standard setting “IPv4 + IPv6 Connectivity” with a public IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 subnet. It offers the highest compatibility and is suitable for almost all application scenarios.

Which product categories does the new network configuration apply to?

The extended network options are currently only available for new orders of our root servers from generation 12. In the future, we will gradually roll out these options to other product categories.

Will anything change on my existing server?

No. Servers that have already been set up are not affected by this change.

I already have a Root Server G12 with IPv4 address and /64 IPv6 subnet. Can I upgrade to a tariff with “IPv6 Connectivity”?

If you purchased your Root Server before 16.12.2025, it is not possible to upgrade to the tariffs with “IPv6 Connectivity” or “Cloud vLAN only”. However, you can still upgrade to larger Root Server tariffs within the same generation and in this case you will still have an IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 subnet included. Please note the general guidelines for upgrades.
